The Nurse Practitioner title can only be used by a person who has been endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

Kylie holds a Master of Nurse Practitioner from the University of Queensland (UQ) and a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Sydney. Kylie has 15 years' nursing experience in Emergency Medicine, Ambulatory Care and General Practice.

She is a clinical lecturer of Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies and Course Coordinator of Master of Nursing in Primary Health Care at UQ.

The role of Nurse Practitioner (NP) expands on that traditionally played by a Registered Nurse. As a NP, Kylie Wilks offers an holistic approach to healthcare, focussing on the individual patient; assessing, diagnosing, treating and caring.

In working to improve the health of her patients, Kylie's services include advanced physical assessments, the ordering of diagnostic tests, the prescription of therapies and non-dependence medications, and the referral of patients to other healthcare providers. She works collaboratively with other healthcare professionals including general practitioners, specialists and allied health such as physiotherapists and dieticians.

Whilst Kylie's scope of practice is broad and covers general healthcare, her special interests include women's and children's health, sexual health and preventative health.

Prescribing Medication

Nurse Practitioners are qualified to prescribe medications in line with their training, education and qualifications (Scope of Practice). Due to tight legislation there are some limitations in accessing Pharmacutical Benifit Scheme (PBS) rebates.

However, the Nurse Practitioner will consult with the collaborating General Practitioner (GP) where appropriate to ensure the patient is not at a financial disadvantage.

The NP at Coomera Waters Medical Centre does not prescibe drugs of dependence such as oxycontin, endone and valium.

Diagnostic Imaging

Nurse Practitioners are qualified to order diagnostic tests including X-ray and ultrasound. However, due to tight legislation there are some limitations for bulk billing services. The Nurse Practitioner will consult with the collaborating GP where appropriate, so the patient will not be at a financial disadvantage

Diagnostic Pathology

Nurse Practitioners are qualified to order diagnostic pathology. In the rare case a specific pathology test needs to be conducted that is not covered under the Medicare bulk billing service, the Nurse Practitioner will consult with the collaborating GP to ensure the patient will not be at a financial disadvantage.
